CYCLING

Status:Active, open to new members
Group leader:
When: On Fridays 10:00 am
Last Friday of each month
Venue: St Gregory's Church

We go on leisurely cycle rides which are selected to avoid huge hills and which allow cyclists to join and leave at different points. We try to cycle on quiet lanes and keep the use of main roads to a minimum. There's always a sociable stop for tea, coffee, cakes, etc. and we are usually back in Bedale by lunchtime.

New members are always welcome, all you need is a roadworthy bike – any sort, including electric bikes will do. Rides start outside St Gregory’s Church in Bedale at 10am on the last Friday of each month.

Both rides start outside St Gregory's church in Bedale at the same time.

A risk assessment has been carried out covering cycling generally and precautions for Covid. Copies are available for new members wanting to join us.

Details of the routes are normally circulated a few days before each ride so that account can be taken of the weather forecast and any planned road closures, etc. Contact Cycling Group Mark for further information or telephone 07914 858606.

RIDERS’ CHECKLIST – we recommend that you:

  • Carry a cycle pump, spare innertube, good quality lock, charged mobile phone, a drink, money for the café stop and a small first aid kit for minor injuries.
  • Wear high visibility clothing, eye protection, a cycle helmet (compulsory) and if necessary, use cycle lights.
  • Bring sunscreen in sunny weather.
  • Check electric bike batteries are charged.
  • Ensure your cycle is legal and roadworthy - we suggest you inspect your cycle prior to each ride, paying particular attention to brakes, frame, steering, pedals, wheels and tyres.
  • Make a note of the group leader’s contact number.
  • Provide the group leaders with ‘in case of emergency’ contact details.
  • Conform to the Road Traffic Act and follow the advice of the Highway Code.
  • Please inform the leader if you feel unwell during the ride or decide to leave the ride at any point.
  • When cycling, we suggest you ride slightly to one side of the wheel in front and leave a safe gap (at least one bike length).
