Alan Johnson was a British politician who served as Secretary of State for the Home Office and as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was the MP for Hull West and Hessle for 20 years from 1997.
The second part of his memoirs, 'Please Mr Postman', covers the period in the 1970s when he became a postman in Slough and later took on increasing responsibilities within the Union of Postal Workers.
Alan talks of the characters who worked in the sorting office and some of his customers. This includes the farmer's wife who offered a hearty breakfast most mornings, the mysterious lady who appeared daily, topless, at her window as the postman passed by and the calamity of nearly delivering some soft porn magazines to the local nunnery. He also talks of his family and the tragedy that had a lasting impact on all of them.
