Whilst most of the group enjoyed this book, the majority also found the first part of it very confusing as it was not always easy to follow who was speaking. However, later parts were thought to be well-written and a good account of social history. The self-serving failings of human nature and the need to maintain appearances at all costs seem to underpin the actions taken by all; whether or not they were in the best interests of the child concerned.

Whilst the descriptions in the latter half of the book relating to art, poetry and photography are very interesting, it was felt that the book would have been easier to read had they not been included.

This is a memoir and mystery that investigates the 1929 kidnapping of the author’s mother from a Lincolnshire beach. Although found safely five days later, the child has no memory of the event. The book explores familial secrets, the subjectivity of memory and the community’s refusal to discuss the disappearance.
