Everyone enjoyed this interesting and informative talk, which was very well attended. It covered the history of the railway station from its opening in 1847 to closure in 1969, looking at the facilities of the station and the traffic handled.
It also covered the period after closure when a farm and garden supplier utilised the building. The RBPT acquired the building in 2002 and the talk covered the fundraising efforts by the local community, which enabled grants to also be obtained. The talk concluded with a look at
the development of 'The Station' and what it has to offer today.
John Young was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Auchterarder, Perthshire. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1965, he was commissioned into Royal Signals and retired in 2000 after 37 years’ service. He arrived by train at Richmond railway station, stepping onto the platform for the first time as a young soldier on Monday 3rd January 1966.
John is a lifelong railway enthusiast and has been a volunteer at ‘The Station’ since 2002 including two terms as a Trustee. He has been a judge for the National Railway Heritage Awards for over 30 years and is also an author.
