All but two of the Group were not very keen on this book and those already familiar with work by this author agreed it was not one of her better ones. Whilst it was felt it was an authentic portrayal of 14th century life and showed how little control women had over their own destinies, the strong character studies did not make up for the overly detailed descriptions of clothes and food. It was interesting to learn about a little-known historical figure but would not encourage us to read more from this author.
The story follows the most famous ‘love triangle’ of the 14th century between Jeanette of Kent, a household Knight called Thomas Holland and William Montague, the heir to the earldom of Salisbury.
